Confinement, 2020

In Isolation by Barbara Helvey Hughes

They can’t hear us.
Scientists set up their equipment
equipped to hear humanity’s hum
but we are all inside and
they can’t hear us.

I read we are
a thrum on the seismograph’s heartbeat.
Our routine roar ~ today’s distant pulse.
Perfect pandemic whisper
now, noise no more.

Did you know Earth
makes a Hum of sphere and circle sounds?
Did you know trees breathe and brooks babble?
The Great Clamor of Nature.
For us? Ignored.

Isolation
means nothing to birds and bears and trees.
We call ourselves sentient beings
what do they call us (humans)?
Can they hear us?
